The U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed 24-year-old Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was one of three people killed in a boating accident near Miami Beach Sunday morning.
In a statement the team said, “The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernández. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.”
Fernandez, who immigrated to the United States from Cuba at age 16, was the 2013 National League Rookie of the Year. Over the last 4 seasons, The Marlins ace had established himself as one of Major League Baseball’s premier talents. This season he posted a 16-8 record with a 2.86 ERA and was named an All-Star.
The Marlins game against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday has been cancelled.
